What we do
Tuesday evenings 6.30 to 8.00pm.
Most sessions will be lead by or assisted by a club coach and there will be a focus on learning or practicing key orienteering skills.
The format, activity and location of Club Nights varies through the year. We usually identify a nearby pub for those wanting to socialise afterwards.
- In the Autumn the sessions are currently MapRuns using GPS to identify the control sites mainly urban settings in different parts of the City and County.
- We take a break during December.
- From January onwards they are based at Markfield Community Centre. We use an indoor room and outdoors in the streets and parks of Markfield.
- As the evening light improves in March onwards, we may use other venues.
- In the late spring and summer whilst the Summer League is running, the club takes another break.
MapRun
The control sites have no visible controls. Instead the Start, Finish and all control sites are identified by a GPS signal on your phone. The printed map is identical to a regular event. The signal can be received by an app on your phone or smart watch within a few metres of the feature marked on your map. On club nights advice and assistance will be available for anyone new to MapRun.
Fot autumn club nights you can register in advance for a printed map. The locations start with parkland and then use urban area when evenings are darker. If you wish to run a MapRun course at other times, goto the Virtual Orienteering section on British Orienteering’s Go Orienteering page.
See below for this year’s club night locations.
The App
All participants need a smart phone or smart watch with the MapRun or MapRunG App.
GPS Signals
MapRun updates itself at set intervals of time. Usually 20 secs but this is changeable from within the MapRun Menu under Settings. The satellite updates can be affected if you have any overhead covering such as a tree canopies. So sometimes there is no instant reaction when you reach a control and you may need to wait a few seconds to let your phone/watch collect the next cycle of satellite signals.
Navigation
You are strongly recommended to navigate around the courses using the printed paper version of the course which will be available at the start for everyone who prebooked their entry. Although possible, it is more difficult using the MapRun course as displayed on the phone, so is not recommended.

In order to ensure we print enough maps or other materials, it is helpful if you book in advance via the web page for the evening –
