Ian’s courses used the area well and using SI punching allowed some controls to be fairly close to the later sites. He had few controls in the west as vandalism was expected. Only a kite on the Yellow disappeared, but was replaced before the start time. The kite was found in Irchester village! Some of the vegetation, but not the brambles, had died back making a few controls rather easier than expected.
The difficulty in fully mapping all the earthwalls did not allow Ian to use some sites, which he would like to have used; this would have improved a few legs.
Failure of four batteries on the morning was handled easily from the stock of five spares.
Comments I heard on the day were that adult competitors enjoyed their run, so I hope it applied to you too!

Most
of all I would like to thank the small team of helpers who pitched in to make
the event run smoothly. Special mention must be made of the efforts of Kevin
Bradley and Andy Portsmouth who looked after the technical side of the SI
business.
The
location, the competition from another event and the weather all conspired to
keep the number of competitors down below 100. Nevertheless, those who came
seemed to have enjoyed it.
We
were very fortunate to have been given the use of a building for registration
and download – as the weather turned out it was an absolute godsend. The
Rangers at Irchester were very helpful and accommodating making my job all the
easier.
No
accidents reported, no lost property, no missing competitors (almost launched a
search party for the last finisher on Brown!) and the sun eventually shone on
the later runners. So, despite the low turnout I’ll consider it a success.

It
was always going to be difficult to get a reasonable attendance for an event so
far from Leicester - what with the
CompassSport cup final on the same day. The weather didn’t help, but at least
it brightened up later and the trees looked glorious in the vast range of hues
and colours.
I
hope those who came enjoyed their runs, even if they were not quite as
challenging as I would have liked. The courses were limited because of minor
anomalies on the map where earthbanks and paths are incorrect with relation with
each other and this prevented a whole block of forest being used. This is a
considerable constraint when there are large areas of particularly pain inducing
hawthorn, allowing few chances to escape the path network.
I
was very apprehensive about using e-punching considering I had lost 3 controls
at a RAFO event in ’92. Fortunately my fears proved unfounded and we only
suffered minor vandalism in the vicinity of Big Foot Pond on Saturday night. A
certain wayward orienteer who came the scenic route via Irchester located a kite
on the village green. Thanks Ernie!
With
only 95 competitors I thought it
important that they should all complete their courses. Faced with an East
Midlands Champion about to retire became a mobile master map providing key
information on the location of the final 3 controls. In the interests of
fairness we refused to accept a “retirement” from a lady who had omitted to
dib at the last control and sent her back out again.
Thanks to Neil for collecting and returning equipment and to Roger for letting me play on his computer, chauffeuring and collecting controls.
