This event was originally planned for early March 2001 and was cancelled at the last minute due to F&M. It was originally planned as traditional punching and the central forest road was to be the car park these factors and the large fenced area limited the scope for several courses. The change to e-punching and to the car park came too late to re-plan the courses although I am sure improvements could have been made if there had been time for a radical rethink. The other limitations of the area were the brambles and thick patches of thorn bushes. It was not possible to steer clear these altogether but the optimum routes should have avoided the worst of these.
Being out of the country for the day of the event and week before, I am very grateful to Neil Costello for taking over all the hard work involved in the last stages. Also thanks to Ernie Williams for liasing with the printers and Ian for his advice and thoroughness in the course preparations.

Planner on the day comments
Although nearly everyone bore some scars from the notorious brambles, most of you expressed positive comments on the courses, and the credit for that belongs to Chris and Ian. I would like thank the members who helped me come to grips with the later stages of planning a badge event with e-punching. Particularly to the team of Ian Wells, Liz Rock and Gary and Mary Bothroyd who gave up Saturday as well as Sunday to put out and collect in nearly 70 controls. Ernie Williams did a sterling job as printing co-ordinator whilst Ian Whitehead was invaluable. Thanks to you all who competed and made the event a success.
Neil Costello.
A big thank you to all the LEI members and friends who worked so hard to make the day a success. A great team effort.
Unfortunately, we had no choice in placing the car parking area so far away from the competition area. However, I hope the minibus provided helped especially later in the day when it started to rain!
We are also indebted to Brigstock and Fermyn Country Park for all their assistance on the day particularly when the registration tent blew away at 09.00, and they very kindly allowed us to use the Visitor Centre in its place!!

The event was a long time coming due to the foot and mouth
troubles of last year.
However, the wait had a positive and negative side. The
positive is that it is a lot drier underfoot this year (a lot of the area, including most
of the rides and paths, was a giant swamp!), making the area more pleasant to run on. On
the negative, the brambles are a lot worse, especially in the more open areas (as many of
you will testify, with all the cuts and scratches you obtained).
It is a new area to orienteering, and as such, course lengths had to be estimated using similar areas (are there any?) In general, the times are as recommended, with some courses being a bit long. However, these figures could have been distorted by the small number of competitors on some courses.
Chris made very good use of the area, in spite of the constraints of the open area, and the large areas of 'grot'. Thanks to Chris, Simon and Neil (who stood in because Chris was away for the event - was that a clever move or what?)
The LEI team worked very efficiently, and I thank them on your behalf.
Finally, the importance of downloading (and finishing) can't be overstressed. The finish team had to make a phone call to one person to check that he had finished. Everybody could have packed up 45 minutes earlier had two persons downloaded, as well as the aforementioned person. The SI system effects a very good check out of the wood, but it only works if EVERYBODY uses the system properly.
