Hope you enjoyed your run at
Wakerley. Apologies to those who had a long wait for the single
loo; the FC promised twice that they would unlock the other
facilities. At least the Weather Gods smiled on the event -
despite the dreadful forecast - and you saw Wakerley at its best.
Thanks to the usual suspects
for readily coming to our assistance in putting on the event;
particularly to those who volunteered without my even asking,
especially the car-park marshals who shoe-horned you all in, with none
of you much more than 100m from registration. Well done team, we
couldn't have done it without you.
Those lucky enough to win
trophies will hopefully be able to pick them up before the event at
Hardwick Hall; well done to you too.

This is the
third time
that I have controlled for the Leicester club at Wakerley. On each
occasion the event has gone well. However the area, as are many woods
in this part of the country, is affected by brambles. John’s
courses also had to contend with recent forestry workings, which for
environment purposes left a carpet of brashings in many areas. So we
felt these changes and the brambles had to be reasonably mapped to
give fair route choice, by either to stay on paths and tracks or go
across.
We also learnt
only in
January Information, that Forest Enterprise had let part of the wood
for army style war games, which took two important large blocks out
of the planning. Also unfortunately the date for the April activity
meant a clash with Leicester’s event. This constrained all the
longer courses to a narrow western corridor to turn round in, as in
the area further to the west, at this time of the year the brambles
are even more formidable.
Looking at the
winning
times and hearing some of the comments after the event John’s
courses were very well received. I thank John for that and along with
Gary’s excellent organization side, assisted by many club members,
I personally was very pleased to be part of the team.
